The funny thing about publishing is that it’s always changing. You only have to look to your editors, publicists, and graphic designers to know that the industry is ever evolving. While that can be overwhelming, we’re here to help.
When I was first starting out I didn’t know heads from tails or as my granny is fond of saying, “I didn’t know my asshole from my elbow.” I was lucky enough to have a pair of bloggers take me under their wing. They introduced me to authors they knew and trusted who became close friends along the way. Without them, I wouldn’t have known where to begin. If I could do it all over again, there are things I would do differently and things that I would keep the same. Here’s a quick rundown of what I think are the highlights if you’re looking to self publish a book so that you can put your best foot forward. (This is what I tell friends when they ask me) Over the next few months, Alyssa and I will touch on these topics more in depth.
- Write the book!
- Find an editor you work well with. One size does not fit all!
- Build your social media presence.
- Start a newsletter and build it.
- Open your vendor accounts and decide if wide or KU is for you.
- Design a cover or contract a designer.
- Format your book or hire a formatter.
- Book your marketing and promotion.
- Welcome to the world, book baby! Pop those corks. You did it!
Keep in mind some of these steps may take some time. A good book is not born overnight. Find your style and your rhythm and how that fits into the market. This may seem daunting at times, but take a breath and look around you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We’re here to help.
